About Us
To honor Gilmore's legacy, Michael
Cummings, a Milton, MA native who also hails from
Ballygar, County Galway, formed the Patrick S. Gilmore
Society in Boston in 1969 to make the public aware of
Gilmore's music. Between 1993 and 2002, the Society
hosted a sting of popular band concerts each summer
on the Boston Esplanade, where community bands from
throughout New England came together. Through this web
site, we continue to assist researchers, genealogists,
and musicians around the world who are seeking information
on the maestro.
The Gilmore web site is currently maintained by the
Boston
Irish Tourism Association, (BITA) a group that promotes
Irish culture and heritage in America. BITA president,
Michael Quinlin was awarded the Boston Public Library's
biennial Alicia Monti Research Fellowship this year
to create an annotated bibliography for the Library's
extensive collection of 19th century Irish music. Quinlin's
research at the Library in August and September 2005
will cover the works of important Irish musicians and
composers like Michael Kelly, Thomas Moore, Michael
W. Balfe and Patrick S. Gilmore, whose works helped
to shape Boston's musical life in the 19th century.

BITA also maintains
Irish Massachusetts, the Irish
Heritage Trail and the Boston
Irish Famine Memorial web sites. The web master
for these sites is Colette
Quinlin.
In September 2004 Michael Cummings donated
his collection of materials on P.S. Gilmore to The
Irish Music Center at the John J. Burns Library
at Boston College.
